How it Works

How Therapy Works

Our Approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy

You Me Us Counselling and Psychotherapy is a small organisation local to York and Ripon. Our name grew from the three critical aspects to the counselling relationship.

You

Whoever you are, wherever you’re from, your experiences are unique.  Your upbringing, your history and everything that has happened to you during your life has shaped you into the person you are.  We never ask ‘what is wrong with you?’ but ‘what has happened to you?’

Me

All our counsellors have trained for at least 3 years on a course accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).  Ongoing membership of this organisation means that we are regularly supervised and are committed to continuing our professional development.  We work humanistically, which means we believe you are the expert on what you need, and will not give you advice or coaching but will support and enable you to find your own way forward when perhaps the route seems impassable.

Us

Perhaps the most important element of counselling is the relationship between the counsellor and the client (you).  For effective counselling to take place it is really important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor.  Trust may take some time to build, but as we go along, we will check in with you that you are content with our work together.

Types of Session

We offer therapy sessions both in-person and online, allowing you to choose the format that best suits your life. Regardless of the format, both approaches prioritise a confidential space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings.

In-person Sessions

All our therapists have rooms available which are designed to feel private, relaxed and comfortable. The benefits of face-to-face counselling include focused attention in a shared space which fosters connection without any association to your home or work environment.

Online Therapy

If you prefer online counselling sessions, we offer these through secure video platforms, allowing clients and counsellors to connect remotely. Benefits include greater accessibility, convenience, flexible scheduling, reduced travel time, and increased comfort for clients who prefer receiving support from their own environment.
